Your skin makes squalane naturally. After 30, it slows down.

Canadian Grace 在 Jun 17, 2026

Here is something most people never learn about their own skin: it produces squalane all on its own. Or at least, it used to.

Your skin already knows this ingredient

Squalene, spelled with an e, makes up around 13 percent of your skin's natural sebum, the protective layer that keeps it soft, hydrated, and resilient. Your body produces it naturally, and that production peaks in your teens and early twenties, when skin tends to look its plumpest and bounciest.

It sits in the outermost layer of the skin, where it helps slow the rate at which water escapes. That is most of what sebum is for. It is not a moisturizer in the way people usually mean the word; it is closer to a seal.

Squalene and squalane are not the same word

The one-letter difference is the whole point, and it gets glossed over constantly.

Squalene is what your skin makes. It is unsaturated, which in practice means it oxidises quickly once exposed to air. That instability is exactly why you cannot simply bottle it and put it on a shelf.

Squalane is squalene that has been hydrogenated, a process that saturates the molecule and makes it stable. It resists oxidation, has a long shelf life, and stays colourless and effectively odourless. It is the same backbone your skin recognises, in a form that survives being sold in a bottle.

So when a label says squalane, it has been through that step. There is no such thing as a raw, unprocessed squalane oil, and a brand implying otherwise is describing something that would go rancid before it reached you.

After 30, production slows down

As you move through your twenties and into your thirties, natural squalene production begins to decline. Sebum output falls across the board with age, and the skin's barrier tends to lose water more readily than it did.

This is part of the reason skin can start to feel drier, a little less plump, and slower to bounce back over time. You are quite literally making less of one of your skin's own building blocks.

Worth being clear about the limits of that claim, though. Declining squalene is one factor among many. Sun exposure, sleep, hydration, genetics, and the weather you live in all matter, and some of them matter more. Topping up one molecule does not reverse the rest.

What squalane actually does, and what it does not

What it does: it is an emollient and a light occlusive. It sits on the surface, smooths the texture of the skin, and reduces how quickly water evaporates out of it. Skin feels softer and looks less tight. That effect is real, and it is immediate.

What it does not do: it is not an active. It will not resurface, brighten, or exfoliate. It does not stimulate your skin into producing more of its own squalene. If you are looking for something that works on tone and fine lines over time, rosehip oil is the one in our range with that reputation, and it works differently.

Squalane's advantage is not potency. It is that almost nobody reacts badly to it.

Where it comes from matters

A large share of the squalane on the market is derived from sharks, specifically from deep-sea shark liver oil. This is not a fringe practice, and it is rarely disclosed on packaging because the ingredient name is identical either way.

Ours never is. Our squalane is 100 percent olive-derived: the same molecule your skin knows, sourced from olives, never from animals. Sugarcane-derived squalane is the other common plant source and is equally fine on this point.

If a squalane product does not say where its squalane comes from, that is worth a question rather than an assumption.

Who it suits

Squalane is one of the easiest oils to tolerate. It is very light, absorbs almost immediately, and leaves no film, which is why it tends to work for people who have written off face oils entirely after a bad experience with something heavier.

It is commonly cited as among the lowest-risk oils for congestion-prone skin. Those ratings are not a regulated standard and deserve scepticism as a category, but squalane's reputation here is unusually consistent across sources.

If your skin is oily and you have been avoiding oils, this is the sensible place to start. If your skin is very dry, squalane alone may not be enough occlusion in winter, and something heavier like argan layered over it will hold better.

How to use it

Press a few drops into damp skin, morning or night. Damp matters: the oil slows the evaporation of the water already on your skin, so applying to a dry face gives you less of the effect.

It goes on after anything water-based and before anything heavier. It layers quietly under everything else in your routine, including makeup and sunscreen, and gets along with all of it. There is more on the general principle in our guide to using face oil without it feeling greasy.

Two to four drops is usually plenty for a whole face. More does not absorb better; it just sits there.

Common questions

Can I use it with retinol or vitamin C? Yes. Squalane is chemically inert and does not interfere with actives. Many people use it specifically to buffer the dryness that retinol causes.

Does it expire? Squalane is the most stable oil we sell, precisely because of the hydrogenation step. Kept out of direct sunlight it holds for a long time, far longer than an unsaturated oil would.

Is it the same as squalane in a moisturizer? The molecule is, but the concentration usually is not. In a cream, squalane is typically a small percentage of a mostly-water formula. Neat squalane is the ingredient on its own.

Will it help my skin barrier? It supports it by reducing water loss, which gives the barrier better conditions to do its own work. We have written more on that in the skin barrier piece.

You cannot stop your skin from slowing down. But you can give it back what it is starting to miss. Replenish what time takes away.
