Marula oil vs argan oil: which one is right for your skin?

Canadian Grace 在 Oct 03, 2026

Argan has been the famous one for well over a decade. Marula arrived later, got picked up by a few high profile brands, and now sits next to it on most shelves. If you are standing in front of both wondering whether you need one or the other, here is the honest comparison.

Where do marula and argan oil come from?

Argan oil is pressed from the kernels of the argan tree, which grows almost exclusively in southwestern Morocco. Marula oil comes from the kernels of the marula fruit, native to southern Africa, and is most associated with Namibia and South Africa.

Both are traditional oils with long histories of local use, and both are cold pressed for cosmetic use so the fatty acid profile stays intact.

How do they differ on your skin?

The practical difference comes down to fatty acid composition, and it shows up the moment you apply them.

Argan is roughly balanced between oleic acid and linoleic acid, with a notable vitamin E content. It feels moderately rich, sinks in at a medium pace, and leaves a slight softness on the surface.

Marula is much higher in oleic acid, typically in the seventy to eighty percent range, with comparatively little linoleic acid. Counterintuitively, that high oleic content comes with a texture most people describe as surprisingly light and fast absorbing. It is one of the least greasy feeling oils in the category.

Which oil suits which skin?

If your skin is dry, tight, mature, or feels stressed and depleted, marula tends to be the more comfortable choice. The high oleic content is conditioning and the light finish means you can use it in the morning without your makeup sliding.

If your skin is normal to slightly dry, or you also want something you can run through frizzy hair ends, argan is the more versatile pick. Its vitamin E content and balanced profile make it a good everyday all rounder, and it does double duty on hair in a way marula is rarely used for.

If your skin is oily or acne prone, neither of these is your first stop. Higher linoleic oils like jojoba or rosehip usually sit better on that skin type.

Is marula oil comedogenic?

Marula is generally considered low on the comedogenic scale, and most people tolerate it well on the face. That said, the comedogenic scale itself is a blunt instrument, and individual response varies far more than a single number suggests. Patch test on your jawline for a few days before committing it to your whole face.

Do you need both?

Honestly, most people do not. Pick based on how your skin behaves and how you want the oil to feel, not on which name you have heard more often.

Where having both makes sense is if you want a lighter oil for daytime and a richer one for night, or if you want one dedicated to face and one to hair. In that case marula for face and argan for both is a sensible split.

How do you use a facial oil like these?

Three to five drops, pressed into slightly damp skin as the last step of your routine, or mixed into your moisturiser. Damp skin matters more than most people realise, because the oil helps hold the water that is already there rather than sealing a dry surface.

We go deeper on technique in how to use face oil so it actually absorbs.

Both of ours are single ingredient and nothing else: virgin organic marula and 100% organic argan. If you want to know why we are so particular about that, we explained it in why 100% means 100%.
