Yes, batana oil expires. Unrefined botanical oils typically stay good for one to two years unopened and around six to twelve months once opened, depending on how they're stored. The complication with batana is that its normal state already looks and smells like something most people would call spoiled.
What normal batana looks like
Authentic raw batana oil is dark, ranging from deep amber to near-black, and it smells strongly of coffee or roasted nuts. It's thick at room temperature and will firm up further when cold.
All of that is correct. The colour comes from the traditional roasting of the palm kernels before pressing, and so does the scent. It's the most common reason people contact us about a bottle they think has gone wrong.
Colour also varies between batches. Raw, unrefined material from a natural harvest is not colour-consistent, and forcing it to be would mean refining it.
What a rancid oil actually smells like
Rancidity is oxidation, and it has a distinct smell that isn't coffee. It's sharp and sour, closer to old crayons, stale nuts, or wet cardboard. If you've ever opened a forgotten bottle of cooking oil, you know it immediately.
The test is whether the smell is rich or sour. Batana's roasted, coffee-like depth is a good smell, even if it's a surprising one. Rancid is unpleasant in a way you won't have to think about.
Three other signs
Texture that has turned gritty or separated in a way that doesn't resolve when warmed in your hands. Thickening is normal in cold weather; permanent graininess is not.
A colour shift toward grey or cloudy, rather than the natural range of browns.
Any change in how your skin responds to an oil you've used comfortably before.
How to make it last
Keep it away from light and heat. A closed cupboard is better than a windowsill or the edge of a bathroom counter that catches sun.
Close it properly. Oxygen is what drives oxidation, so an open or loose lid does more damage than time.
Use clean, dry hands or a spoon. Water introduced into an anhydrous oil is the fastest way to shorten its life.
Pure oils have no added preservatives, which is the point, and it's also why storage matters more than it would with a formulated product.
