Rosehip oil: the gentle, natural alternative to retinol

Canadian Grace en Jun 30, 2026

Retinol gets a lot of credit, and it earns some of it. But it is also harsh, irritating for many people, and off-limits during pregnancy. So it is no surprise that rosehip oil keeps coming up as the gentle, natural alternative. Here is an honest look at how the two compare.

Why is rosehip called a natural retinol?

Because it contains vitamin A compounds. Rosehip oil is rich in carotenoids, which are provitamin A, and this is the basis of the comparison.

You will also see claims that rosehip contains trans-retinoic acid, the prescription-strength form. That claim circulates widely and the evidence behind it is weak and disputed. We would rather tell you that than repeat it, because the honest version is still a good story.

What is fair to say: rosehip sits in the same vitamin A family, it is associated with supporting skin cell turnover and softening the look of fine lines, and it is meaningfully gentler than retinol. It is not the same molecule and it does not work at the same strength.

How does it compare to retinol?

The trade-off is speed versus comfort. Retinol is more potent and can work faster, but that potency comes with a cost: dryness, flaking, redness, and increased sun sensitivity, especially at the start.

Rosehip works more gradually and gently, and because it is also rich in fatty acids and antioxidants, it hydrates and soothes while it works rather than stripping. For a lot of people, gentle and consistent beats strong and irritating.

The honest framing is not that rosehip replaces retinol. It is that a gentle thing you use every night for a year outperforms a strong thing you abandon after three weeks because your face is peeling.

What is actually in it

Rosehip is unusually high in linoleic acid, roughly half its fatty acid content, with a substantial share of linolenic acid alongside. That matters for two reasons.

Linoleic-rich oils are the ones most often recommended for skin prone to congestion, since skin that breaks out tends to be lower in linoleic acid to begin with. It is a pattern rather than a rule, but a useful one.

The second reason is less convenient. Those same polyunsaturated chains oxidise quickly. Rosehip is among the least stable oils we sell, which is why it comes in dark glass and why the storage advice below is not boilerplate.

Who is rosehip oil best for?

It is a wonderful fit for sensitive, reactive, or rosacea-prone skin that cannot tolerate retinol. It suits anyone who simply prefers a gentler, more natural route to brighter, smoother-looking skin, and it works well on skin that is both congestion-prone and dry, a combination many oils handle badly.

It is less suited to anyone wanting fast, visible change on deep lines. Retinol genuinely is stronger, and pretending otherwise would not serve you.

Rosehip during pregnancy

This comes up constantly, and it deserves a careful answer rather than a reassuring one.

Retinol is avoided during pregnancy. Rosehip contains provitamin A carotenoids, which are a different thing from retinoids, and it is widely regarded as a reasonable choice. But it is a vitamin A-associated oil, guidance varies, and we are not in a position to clear any product for your pregnancy.

Ask your doctor or midwife. We have written a fuller piece on the question itself, and it reaches the same conclusion: this is a decision to make with a clinician, not a blog.

What can I realistically expect?

Honesty matters here. Rosehip is gentle, which also means it is patient. You are looking at weeks of consistent use, not overnight transformation, and the results are a gradual improvement in tone, texture, and radiance rather than a dramatic change.

It is also prized for helping soften the look of scars and uneven tone over time. Think nourishing and restorative, not aggressive. If nothing has changed after three months of nightly use, it is probably not the right product for what you are trying to fix.

How to use it

Press a few drops into clean, slightly damp skin in the evening, after any water-based steps and before anything heavier. Three or four drops covers a face.

Because vitamin A compounds can increase sun sensitivity, always pair it with sunscreen in the morning. Evening application is the simpler habit for that reason.

Store it somewhere dark and cool, and close it properly. Some people keep rosehip in the fridge, which is not fussiness; it genuinely extends its life. If it starts to smell sharp or crayon-like, it has oxidised and should be replaced.

Common questions

Can I use it with retinol rather than instead of it? Yes, and many people do, using rosehip on the nights they skip retinol to let skin recover.

Will it help acne scars? It is commonly used for the look of marks and uneven tone. Raised or indented scarring is a different problem and needs a dermatologist.

Rosehip seed oil or rosehip fruit oil? Most of what is sold is seed oil, which is the one with the fatty acid profile described above.

Why is mine orange? Carotenoids. Cold-pressed unrefined rosehip runs amber to deep orange and varies between batches. A pale, clear version has been refined.

Our rosehip oil is cold-pressed and pure, with nothing added to dilute what makes it special. If retinol has never agreed with your skin, this might be the gentler path you have been looking for.
