Rosemary oil vs minoxidil: what the research actually shows

Canadian Grace on Sep 30, 2026

If you spend any time on beauty social media, you have seen the claim: rosemary oil works just as well as minoxidil. It gets repeated constantly, usually with no source attached. There is a real study behind it. There is also a lot of context that gets stripped away before the claim reaches you.

We sell a rosemary and castor hair oil, so we have an obvious interest in that headline being true. That is exactly why we are going to walk through what the research says, including the parts that do not help us.

What did the rosemary oil study actually test?

The study people are referring to was published by Panahi and colleagues in the journal SKINmed in 2015. It enrolled 100 people with androgenetic alopecia, the genetic form of pattern hair loss. Half applied pure rosemary essential oil to the scalp twice daily. The other half used a 2% minoxidil solution. Researchers counted hairs using microphotography at three months and again at six months.

At three months, neither group had changed meaningfully. At six months, both groups showed a significant increase in hair count, and there was no statistically significant difference between them. Participants using minoxidil reported scalp itching more often than those using rosemary oil.

Why does the internet version overstate it?

Four things get left out almost every time.

First, the comparison was against minoxidil at 2%, not the 5% formulation most people actually buy today. Second, it was a single study with 100 participants, which is small. Third, the participants all had androgenetic alopecia specifically, so the results say nothing about postpartum shedding, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, or hair thinning from a medical condition or nutrient deficiency. Fourth, six months was the minimum, not the point at which results appeared. Nothing measurable had happened at the three month mark in either group.

None of that makes the study worthless. It is peer reviewed and reasonably designed. It just does not support the sentence people build out of it.

Does the form of rosemary matter?

Yes, and this is the part almost nobody mentions. The study used pure rosemary essential oil applied directly to the scalp at a specific concentration. That is a different preparation from a rosemary infused carrier oil, a rosemary hair serum, a rosemary shampoo, or a scalp mist. Results from one form do not automatically transfer to another.

Our own Rosemary + Castor oil is a cosmetic hair and scalp oil, not the preparation used in that trial, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It is made to condition the scalp and hair and to make the ritual of a scalp massage easy and pleasant. It is not a hair loss treatment, and we do not position it as one.

What is rosemary oil actually good at?

Setting the hair loss question aside, rosemary is a well liked scalp ingredient for reasons that have nothing to do with drug comparisons. It has a clean, herbal scent that most people find pleasant. It contains antioxidant compounds including carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid. Diluted properly in a carrier oil, it is generally well tolerated on the scalp.

Pairing it with castor oil gives you a thicker, slower oil that stays where you put it during a massage instead of running down your neck, which is a large part of why the combination is popular.

How do you use a rosemary scalp oil?

Part your hair in sections and apply a small amount directly to the scalp, not the lengths. Massage with your fingertips for two or three minutes. Leave it for at least thirty minutes, or overnight if you prefer, then shampoo out. Two or three times a week is plenty. More is not better here, and heavy oiling on an already oily scalp tends to backfire.

Patch test on your inner forearm first, especially if your scalp is sensitive or reactive. Keep it away from your eyes. If you are pregnant or nursing, check with your doctor before using concentrated rosemary essential oil products.

When should you see a professional instead?

Sudden shedding, patchy loss, a receding line that is moving quickly, or thinning that comes with other symptoms are all reasons to see a doctor or dermatologist rather than start an oil. Hair loss has many causes, including hormonal shifts, thyroid issues, iron deficiency, medication side effects, and stress. An oil cannot diagnose any of those, and the months you spend hoping it will are months you are not treating the actual cause.

If you have already had that conversation and you are simply looking for a scalp ritual you will actually keep up with, that is exactly what a good rosemary and castor oil is for.

You can find our Rosemary + Castor hair oil here. If you want more on why scalp care became the centre of hair routines, we wrote about that in scalp skinification, and we broke down castor oil specifically in what castor oil can and cannot do.
